Bodybuilding supplements tend to portray mixed feelings among any crowd of individuals. To those who are familiar with them, the questions are “What are you using?”, “Are you going all-natural?”, and “how do you like them”?… Among others of course. To the crowd who looks in from the outside, you may get anything from pure curiosity, to the looks typically reserved for those deemed out of their minds. And that is just the thing, there is far too little information out there on the growing industry of bodybuilding supplements. If one thing is for certain however, is that it is indeed a vastly growing industry.
While those who are unfamiliar with these supplements still exist in large herds, the number is dwindling. There are various companies which sell nutritional, herbal, and fitness and sports supplements, but one in particular stands out. The Vitamin Shoppe is one of the largest corporations to date that sells most every brand that manufactures supplements for various means. Here, the proof is in the pudding. The Vitamin Shoppe is a publicly traded company, and as such, we can easily look at their financials to see just how quickly the industry is growing, at least from their standpoint.
In 2008, the sports nutrition supplements industry was marked in at $4.2 billion in sales. The Vitamin Shoppe annual report for 2012 marks sales at $950.9 million in which 53% of those sarms for bulking supplements were specifically related to sports nutrition. The average year over year growth for this company from 2007 – 2012 has been just over %10 with a slight decrease in 2010 which can easily be related to the economic fall during the time. People were still however looking to train hard despite the financial hardships, as the industry as a whole was still growing at a positive rate.
Again, numbers do not lie. And while we can attribute some of these growth numbers to inflation, it is minimal at best on a yearly basis in comparison to the overall scope. People looking to train to get in shape, or to train for a specific sport are realizing that they can truly benefit from the various types of supplements available to them. Even more, these supplement manufacturers are working hard to ensure that they are catering to these athletes and fitness lovers. If you have watched any mixed martial arts recently, one company definitely stands out. Muscle Pharm is a group who focuses heavily on developing supplements for sports. While this is good and it certainly helps to project a positive image on the industry as a whole, it may accomplish more to help do away with some of the hard wired misconceptions that society has about these supplements to begin with; especially when it comes to sports.
